About This Item

Boston: Joseph Teal, 1822. First American edition. Leather Bound. Very Good. 12 x 17 inches. Large folio. Collates as [6] + A-E10 (in 2s) (OT) + A-A2 (in 2s) (Apocrypha) + F10-B13 (in 2s) (NT and Indices) + 36 engravings. Includes frontispiece, engraved title page, frontispiece to NT (torn with loss at bottom). Marbled end papers. Scattered foxing, especially to plates. A few page edges uneven at beginning, and a few old page repairs. As with the copy described by O'Callaghan, some of the illustrations state "Engraved for Fowler's Family Bible." others for Teal's edition. "Issued in numbers and had more than 3,000 subscribers." Claimed to be the largest Bible ever printed. Wright p. 209; O'Callaghan p. 382-385; Hills No. 434. Bound in full contemporary brown leather over board with large raised bands ruled in gilt to spine, designs in compartments and red morocco spine label with gilt title. Worn at edges, and cracking at hinges. This edition significant for Seventh-day Adventists because it was the "large" Bible that Ellen Gould White held when she had her first vision (See Norma J. Collins: Heartwarming Stories of Adventist Pioneers, Review and Herald Publishing, 2005) Scarce.
