When they drug Mary and give Colin the choice to allow Robert to do anything to him and save Mary's life or let her die, Colin chooses to save Mary, and, when she awakes, he is dead. Basis for the 1990 movie starring Rupert Everett, Christopher Walken, Helen Mirren and Natasha Richardson .

Haunting and compelling, -The TimesAs their holiday unfolds, Colin and Maria are locked into their own intimacy. They groom themselves meticulously, as though there waits someone who cares deeply about how they appear. Then they meet a man with a disturbing story to tell and become drawn into a fantasy of violence and obsession.
