About This Item

J C Juta & Co, Cape Town and Johannesburg, 1891. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 414 pages (complete). Two previous owner signatures of these the most notable is that of Walter Pollak. Pollack was a teacher of law, an author of textbooks and a lawyer of repute, but it was his association with Nelson Mandela that he is most remembered. Not only did he, together with his colleague Bram Fischer, teach law to Mandela, but he defended Mandela in the fifties (when Mandela was threatened with disbarment), once as Chairman of the Johannesburg Bar Council. There is also Pollak's stamp on the title page. Frontispage has been removed. The boards have shelving, handling, storage wear about the edges, corners. Stamped gilt borders and titling on the spine. The spine has wear to the head and foot. The boards are scuffed, lightly marked from shelving and handling. The boards are sound and sure. The contents are pleasing. The title page is tanned. There are very occasional annotations. Overwhelmingly, the pages are clean, clear, orderly, tidy, confident and more than competent. fk.
