This "Christmas Book" printed for the publisher Alfred Knopf and his wife by the San Francisco Private Press was produced to give a wider public to the judgement, which Bernard de Voto described as "a great document in democracy and a great document in human freedom". The case arose from the seizure by the Philadlephia police of a number of books alleged by them to be obscene.
