.FIRST EDITION 1660, thick 8vo, approximately 175 x 115 mm, 6¾ x 4½ inches, pages: [4], 1-624, 621-876, 867-882, 893-1148, 1147-1290, 1287-1446, 1433-1448, [14], page 1448 misnumbered 1434, signatures: Signatures: [A]² B-5A8, pagination a little erratic, all catch words correct, collated and guaranteed complete, See ESTC R13134. Bound in full contemporary calf, blind rules to covers, raised bands and gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered morocco label, all edges red. Head and tail of spine slightly worn, tiny crack at tail of upper hinge, old ink blot (30 mm, 1¼") with slight loss to paper of lower inner margin of title page, obscuring the words 'Andrew' and 'printed', neat paper strengthening to that corner, 2 small ink names on title page, 1 dated 1663, 2 small top corners missing with slight loss to page numbers, 1 or 2 dark spots or small pale stains, no loss of legibility. A very good tight clean copy. The author, describing the Turks as "this barbarous nation, the world's present terror" begins his work with an account of their history before the rise of the Ottoman family. The lives of the Ottoman kings and emperors begins on page 118 at the beginning of the 14th century, with the life of King Othoman the founder of the Empire and ends with that of Achmat II, 13th emperor of the Turks in the mid 17th century.
