A very good copy in a highly decorative early leather binding of full dark green morocco, mostly mellowed to an attractive brown colour, with five raised bands to the spine, each ruled in gilt. Compartments ruled and decorated in gilt. Boards fully gilt with elaborate lattice design which has Rampant lion and thistle designs in each small compartments, all within a double ruled gilt border. Turn-ins with decorative gilt borders. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Small area of loss to the bottom outer corner of the front board but overall still a very good attractive late Victorian leather binding.

Edward Moxon & Co. London. 1866. TWELFTH EDITION. 8vo. (6.8 x 4.2 inches). Finely bound contemporary full dark green morocco binding. Decorative flower and leaf design to the top and bottom of both boards and a single gilt ruled border to the centre. Board edges with gilt ruling. Spine with five raised bands. The compartments with gilt ruled lines, flower and leaf designs and lettering. Triple gilt ruled lines to the turn-ins. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owners neat inscription, dated 1867, to the half title page. A lovely copy in a beautiful Victorian decorative leather binding. The binding is unsigned but the work of a skilled bookbinder.

Harris and Son. London. 1820. FIRST EDITION. 12mo. (7 x 4.3 inches). 36pp. Illustrated with hand coloured vignette to the title page and 12 hand coloured woodcuts among the text. Some general thumbing and spotting to most pages. The hand colouring is still bright and vivid throughout. Dis-bound, but complete, in original fawn card boards, printed in black. The boards are rubbed and worn, making some the the printed area quite faint, and there are a few stains. Previous owner names and gift inscriptions, one dated 1820, on the inner front board. ---- Rare in first edition. Worldcat lists just 3 copies of this 1820 first edition, one in the UK, that in the Renier collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and 2 in the USA; The Eloise Ramsey collection at Wayne University in Detroit, and a rebound copy in the Bloomington Lilly Library at Indiana University. --- The author name, Mrs Poole (active between 1808 and 1823) is supplied by Marjorie Moon in her checklist of Harris publications. A few small marks to the blank endpapers of Officers and Gentlemen and some offsetting to Men at arms endpapers otherwise bright and clean copies of the books in the publishers dark blue cloth bindings with gilt lettering to the spines. All three in very good original dustwrappers, designed by Val Biro. Some minor chipping to the edges of Officers and gentlemen, while the other two volumes are very bright, fresh and near fine examples without any of the usual fading. The inner flap of the first and last volumes are price-clipped. Overall a very good, attractive set of Waugh's classic trilogy.
