D.C. Heath & Co. Hardcover. B000JBYEHA 1920 first edition D.C. Heath & Co. (Boston) 5 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches tall x 2 inches thick red cloth hardbound, gilt lettering to spine, xvi, 864 pp. Covers rubbed, bumped and edgeworn, with a black ink 'G' to the spine. Prior owner sticker and stamps to the front pastedown. 1923 gift inscription on front free-endpaper. Because it is such a thick volume, the spine is slightly shaken, but the binding holds quite firmly. Otherwise, a very good copy of this classic geology text - clean, bright and unmarked. He was appointed professor at Peking National University in 1919 or 1920. As part of his life's work, he conducted a geologic survey of China, and is now known as the father of Chinese geology. He was also a prolific author, publishing at least 10 books in the first half of the 20th century. Grabau developed various theories during his lifetime, among them the theory of rhythms concerning the growth of the earth's crust and a theory concerning mountain building and creation. The Dorsum Grabau, a wrinkle ridge on the Moon is named after him. During World War II he remained in Peking. Around 1941 he was interned by the Japanese Imperial Army. His health declined precipitously, and he died of an internal hemorrhage after his release. . Good. 1920. First Edition.
