1695 Digby Bull anti Catholic Pope Treatises Church of England Protestant 3in1

A rare and relatively unknown collection of Catholic treatises by Digby Bull. These works discuss the fundamental doctrines of the Catholic Church. Bull was a cleric in the Church of England who wrote a collection of scripture commentaries in hopes of dissuading many who would convert to Catholicism in England. This late 17th-century work includes three works in Digby Bull including a letter he wrote to the Church of England warning them against the evils against the Protestant Church (notably the Catholic Church and the Popery).

1898 1ed Clara Barton Red Cross Nursing Civil War Medicine Texas Illustrated

"You must never so much think as whether you like it or not, whether it is bearable or not; you must never think of anything except the need, and how to meet it."
– Clara Barton

Clara Barton spent much of her life helping people. She taught and helped care for soldiers on the battlefield during the Civil War, earning the name "Angel of the Battlefield." After going to Europe and learning about an organization there called the Red Cross, she decided to start one in America. As founder of the American Red Cross, which helps victims of natural disasters as well as war, Clara Barton sealed her place in history.

This 1898 first edition of "The Red Cross" catalogues the history of the American Red Cross and is thoroughly expanded from the 1883 edition. It contains new information not in previous iterations and examines relief work in the Civil War, Texas famines, Michigan forest fires, the Spanish-American War, and many… Read More

Description:
Berlin: Julius Springer. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST MATHEMATICALLY CORRECT FORMULATION OF THE HEISENBERG UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE. In quantum mechanics, "the uncertainty principle is any of a variety of mathematical inequalities asserting a fundamental limit to the precision with which certain pairs of physical properties of a particle, such as position x and momentum p, can be known simultaneously. The more precisely the position of some particle is determined, the less precisely its momentum can be known and vice versa. In "Zur quantenmechanik einfacher bewegungstypen," or "Quantum mechanics of simple types of motion, Earle Kennard correctly derived the formula for uncertainty of position and momentum only a few months after Heisenberg stated his principle. While on a sabbatical from Cornell and at the University of Gottingen in 1926, Kennard had learned the new quantum mechanics directly from Heisenberg and Jordan. With that knowledge and his deep understanding of Heisenberg's work,… Read More

1664 RARE 1st ed John Barclay Satyricon Gunpowder Plot Jesuit Satire Morisot

John Barclay was an early 17th-century Scottish poet and author remembered for works such as 'Argenis' and 'Satyricon'. Many of Barclay's works were satirical in nature, most notably 'Satyricon', which was written over the course of ten years at the start of the 17th-century. The last two parts were given separate titles and were not written as part of the original 'Satyricon'; however, they are now considered to be part of the work.
·
'Satyricon' – "a comic novel" (Fleming); a severe satire on Jesuits, medical doctors, education, and literature
·
'Apologia Euphomionis pro se' – a response to Jesuit attacks
·
'Icon Animorum' – a description of the character and mannerisms of various European nations and cultures
o "A masterly description of the manners of several nations of Europe in the beginning of the 18th-century, with remarks moral and philosophical on the various tempers of men." (Lowndes)… Read More

Description:
1735 John LOCKE Essay Concerning Human Understanding Philosophy Tabula Rasa
"I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts."
– John Locke
After studying medicine under the teaching of Thomas Sydenham, John Locke began his journey of philosophical thinking that would develop into his most famous written work. 'An Essay Concerning Human Understanding,' is one of the most important books on the development and cultivation of human understanding and knowledge. It is in this work that Locke first describes the idea of 'blank slate' of the mind or 'tabula rasa.' Locke's 'Essay' is known to have directly influenced famous philosophers such as David Hume and George Berkeley.
This 1735 French edition was translated out of the original English by Pierre Coste and published in Amsterdam by Mortier. This edition is notably desirable because of the full-page portrait of Locke along with smaller, beautiful engraved vignettes.

Description:
1853 Anglo-Saxon 1ed The Ancren Riwle Female Anchorite Monastics Prayers Nuns
The Ancrene Wisse, or Ancrene Riwle, was a 13th-century instructional guide for female monastics living under the anchorite rule. Anchoresses would completely disassociate themselves with society to focus on prayer and asceticism in one solitary location. This guide was collected, edited, and reissued in 1853 by James Morton who included both modern English translations of the ancient Anglo-Saxon English. It includes a thorough history of the Ancrene Riwle – the origins of the sacred quotes, possible authors, and the use of the semi-Anglo grammar.
