About This Item

Philadelphia: Gebbie and Company, 1904. Later edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4 vol. 8vo. [6], vii-xxxvi, 176, [2]; [6], 201, [3]; [6], 304, [2]; [6], 238, [2] pp. Half-bound in smooth brown calf over marbled boards with marbled endpapers and pastedowns. The spine of each volume is lettered and decorated with gilt, top edges gilt. Illustrated by Maurice Leloir. Each volume illustrated with a frontispiece and eleven lithograph plates, with several in-text wood engravings. Preface by Jules Claretie. A beautiful set of Rousseau's life story, his autobiography detailing his birth and upbringing (including his failed apprenticeship to an engraver), his many affairs with women, his patronage and friendship with the French nobility, his flight to Switzerland and final refuge in England. A Near Fine set with a few hints of rubbing to the edges of the boards. Includes the tag of a former book collector on the front pastedown of each volume.

Confessions is an autobiographical book by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In modern times, it is often published with the title The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in order to distinguish it from St. Augustine of Hippo's Confessions, the book from which Jean-Jacques Rousseau took the title for his own book.
