About This Item

London: Andrew Melrose, 1901. reprint. hardback. Very good, reprint edition from 1897, bound in decorative green cloth with blind stamped and gilt titling/flower on cover & spine (a little bumping); text block firm, untrimmed & uncut pages unmarked - but some foxing on endpapers and edges; top edges gilt.. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). The son of a pagan father and a Christian mother, Saint Augustine spent his early years torn between conflicting world-views. The Confessions, written when he was in his forties, recounts how, slowly and painfully, he came to turn away from his youthful ideas and licentious lifestyle to become one of Christianity's most influential thinkers. A remarkably honest spiritual autobiography, the Confessions also addresses fundamental issues of Christian doctrine, and many of the prayers and meditations it includes are still an integral part of the practice of the faith today. From the series Books for the Heart (ed. Alexander Smellie).

Synopsis

Confessions is the name of an autobiographical work, consisting of 13 books, by St. Augustine of Hippo, written between AD 397 and AD 398. Modern English translations of it are sometimes published under the title The Confessions of St. Augustine in order to distinguish the book from other books with similar titles, such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions.
