About This Item

(Johannesburg: Standard Bank Investment Corporation, 1987) 0620114673. 8vo; original blue rexine, lettered in silver gilt on spine and upper cover; dustwrapper; decorative endpapers; pp. (iv) + ix + (i) + 547, incl. index; frontis. portrait. Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed, with wear to extremities of spine panel. Very good condition. 'The period from 1860 to the turn of the nineteenth century marked one of the most eventful and formative stages in South Africa's economic development: diamonds and drought, war and gold, booms and busts. Into this rich tapestry of history is woven the affairs of a vital economic catalyst, The Standard Bank, whose general managers reported in meticulous detail to its London head office the state of the country and the varied fortunes of the bank. This volume, which commemorates the 125th anniversary of The Standard Bank in South Africa, reproduces this primary source material from the bank's archives. It provides, in the words of one general manager of the time, "an unvarnished narrative, and a plain record of actual facts", and in this way will become a valuable contribution to South African historiography.' .
