About This Item
London: William Pickering. Very Good. 1852. First Edition. Hardcover. Autograph; (vi), 300, (4) pages; Volume 2 only. Bookplate of William W. Goodman; earlier ownership indicated by author's inscription on ffep - "W. C. Spring Rice / from the author / 8th June 1852" Text block clean and secure in original brown cloth binding with printed title label at spine (label worn and eroded); chipped at head of spine, lower corners rounded. OCLC 833078512 The recipient could be Hon. W. C. Spring Rice was Secretary of The Commissioners in Lunacy at Whitehall Place S.W., London. The other ownership "William W. Goodman" likely refers to William W. Goodman, Memphis, Vice Chairman, Library Development Program Sponsored by The University of Tennessee Development Council and The University of Tennessee Alumni Association -- a noted collector and philanthropist. Over the course of seven years, Helps did extensive research at the Historical Academy at Madrid, which held rich resources of unpublished Spanish records relating to the Spanish colonization of the West Indies and the Americas. This well informed history of Spanish and Portuguese imperialism and its effects in the Americas is now scarce. The first volume [ issued four years earlier, not present here] focussed on Hispaniola, while this second volume recounts the colonization of Cuba and has a long chapter on Bartolomeo de Las Casas. Las Casas, an enslaver turned Dominican Friar became an ardent abolitionist after he witnessing the Spaniards commit horrible atrocities in Cuba. Sabin 31275. Hogg, African Slave Trade, No. 1136. ; Signed by Author .
