Earlier owner's name, with date, to front free endpaper; faint trace of tape stains to rear endpaper; occasional light fox spots. Very good condition. An eye-catching book. (SABIB 3, p. 199; Hosken, p. 131) This book provides an optimistic vision of the potential of the arid part of South Africa known as Gordonia, incorporating the area that today falls within the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. There is much on the natural history and indigenous inhabitants of the region. "An indefatigable experimenter, he was a man of vision who believed in the conversion of South Africa's desert lands into arrable territory. He upheld the principles of 'dry farming' which would ensure the conservation of soil moisture and prevent the ravages of drought.' - DSAB IV, pp. 335-6 .
