Turner, Samuel The Conquest of the New Zealand Alps, London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1922.

The narrative of seven seasons' climbing in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, including the first solo ascent of Mt. Cook. The author travelled widely, and although he was a bit late to the game and missed out on many of the most significant first ascents of New Zealand Peaks, he did complete important climbs and routes during his climbing trips. Includes rare dust wrapper. Condition: The book itself is a very nice copy, near fine with minimal shelf wear. It is from the Vernon Howard collection. The dust jacket, though, is replete with old water damage. Interestingly it is a complete jacket, so provides a nice window into early dust jackets, and has an amusing photo on its cover. The jacket was obviously damaged while far away from the book, as the book is quite nice. The jacket is virtually complete and is not price clipped, but show lots of evidence of being impacted by water. The rear of the very scarce jacket is water stained discolored. 175.00
