This item is currently on reserve; please contact dealer for more details. Contemporary Cambridge calf, recently and expertly rebacked to style, covers panelled in blind with fillets and fleuron cornerpieces, central panel with decorative tooled border, raised bands, original reddish-brown morocco label.
Gay 98; Blackmer sale catalogue, lot #236; Lowndes III, 1716; Brunet IV, 155; Graesse V, 7-8.

Leaves with one or two trivial defects, but A VERY FINE COPY, the carefully restored binding with remarkably lustrous covers, the margins especially ample, and the text unusually bright, clean, and fresh.

This work promises in its extended title to portray "the lives of Abubeker, Omar and Othman, the immediate successors of Mahomet, giving an account of their most remarkable battles, sieges, etc., particularly those of Aleppo, Antioch, Damascus, Alexandria and Jerusalem, illustrating the religion, rites, customs and manner of living of that warlike people." It is "collected from the most authentick Arabick authors, especially manuscripts, not hitherto publish'd in any European language." Archbishop Laud was a collector of Arabic manuscripts, which he donated to the Bodleian library at Oxford, and it was there that Ockley labored over the Arabic tomes. Foremost among these were the texts ascribed to Al-Wâkidî (now known as the Futuh esh-Sham), which Ockley used to write the present stirring and sympathetic account of the heroic days of the rise of Islam, the first work in English to rely on such early, if somewhat romanticized, sources. Simon Ockley (1678-1720) was an impoverished vicar, educated in oriental languages at Cambridge. A pioneer in his field, he worked tirelessly on the translating of Arabic manuscripts. The present book is his best-known work; he brought out a sequel in 1718.

Greece: London Rodwell & Martin. 1821. Aquatint view of Thermopylæ from the Deluxe edition of Dodwell's "Views in Greece". Original hand colour, mounted on card with title caption to verso The view shows the pass of Thermopylæ with the plain down to the sea, on the left is Mount Knemis and also Mount Å’ta, Thermopylae means "hot gates" in Greek and the name is related with its hot sulphur springs. This is also the place of cavernous entrances to Hades in mythology. Thermopylae is primarily known for the battle that took place there between the Greek forces including the Spartans and the Persian forces. It is the only land route large enough to bear any significant traffic between Lokris and Thessaly and thus was the site of several battles.. Dodwell states that the two figures are"attendants of the author, for as the defiles of Thermopylæ are sometimes infested with banditti ,it was necssary to be well prepared." Bright and clean. First American edition (from the London plates) of the first English translation of Amundsen's account of the three-year journey through the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific (a goal that had eluded explorers for centuries). Description:
XXIV, [4], 391, [1 blank], [19], [1 blank] pp.First edition of the author's most famous work. The orientalist Simon Ockley (1678-1720) was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge. He became fellow of Jesus College and vicar of Swavesey, and in 1711 was appointed professor of Arabic at the University. His History of the Saracens (as he called the 1718 second edition of the present work and the second volume added at that time) long enjoyed a great reputation; unfortunately Ockley took as his main authority a MS. in the Bodleian of pseudo-Wakidi's Futúh al-Shám, which is more historical romance than history. He also translated from the Arabic the Second Book of Esdras" (Enc. Brit.). For some reason, the present copy an alternative version of the dedication to Henry Aldrich, probably from the second edition of 1718, inserted in the middle of the preface, after p. XX. The 1718 edition was printed for the same four publishers (plus one more) and seems likely to come from the same printing office. With old… Read More

Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
