About This Item

1932. MACLEISH, Archibald. CONQUISTADOR. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, [printed at the] Riverside Press, Cambridge, 1932. First edition. Folding map. [viii],114 pp. Octavo, red cloth, title to spine and decorative device on upper board in silver gilt. This copy belonged to Theodore Morrison, who taught at Harvard University and ran the Breadloaf Writers' Conference, and contains marginal and endpaper notes in pencil by him; however, it is not signed by him. Laid-in are four typed pages containing a brief life of Bernal Diaz del Castillo, his preface to his book, a commentary by Maudslay, and some lines excerpted from Macleish's poem. Binding is sunned at spine and along top edges. The endpapers are toned and text that has been clipped from the dust-jacket is taped to the pastedown. Very good.
