Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1953. Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto. 1361 pages, indeed. Hardcover bound in blue cloth. Binding has some rubbing. Some spotting on rear board. Text has some light toning to outside edges of pages. Not only does this volume offer the text of the Constitution, it also offers some analysis and commentary as well as giving some historical background. Of particular interest is the commentary and notes on the Amendments. Discussion of the First Amendment (Religion, Free Speech, Etc.) runs from page 757 to 810. This section is in itself worth the ownership of the book. Surprisingly, the section on the 2nd Amendment offers little commentary... only a paragraph. This mentions the Enforcement Act of 1870 in relation to a scheme to prevent negroes from owning firearms, a brief discussion of a "well regulated Militia" and the transportation of shotguns across state lines. Likewise, Amendment 3 offers little exposition. Amendment 4 (Searches and Seizures) offers 7 pages of text. Amendment 5 (Rights of Persons) runs from page 837 to page 872. Amendment 13 (Slavery and Involuntary Servitude) offers discussion from page 945 to 954, and Amendment 14 (Rights of Citizens) runs from 955 to 1177. Amendment 15 (Right of Citizens to Vote) runs from 1179 to 1186. The volume goes up to only Amendment 22. Another interesting section is "Acts of Congress Held Unconstitutional in Whole or in Part by the Supreme Court of the United States." This listing of 73 Acts (with a few lines of text each) runs from page 1239 to page 1254.
