About This Item
New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1853. Hardcover. 16mo. Black blind-embossed cloth with ornate gilt lettering, decorations and pictorial stamping. vi, 188pp, (4pp ads). Chromolithograph title page, several full-page steel engravings. Very good. Bit of edge and corner wear. A tight, bright, attractive second printing of this 1852 collection of preachy children's tales by the short-lived (1828-63) New England poet and short story writer. Outstanding color title page graphic depicting a seated mother surrounded by several children gazing into a crib is repeated on the front board giltstamping. A nice copy of this uncommon charmer, which was reprinted three times in the 1850s. Oddly, the title as it appears on the spine, front board, and chromolithograph title page is "Contentment Is Better Than Wealth" -- only the printed title page omits the "Is." Interesting front pastedown engraved bookplate of "W.D. Spelman's Library," a noted late 19th century Albany businessman. Difficult to find in acceptable condition.
