First collective edition of the Contes de La Fontaine and first illustrated edition, the very first of the three existing editions.
"There are three editions of this edition under the same date:
In the Premier, p. 211 of volume I, containing the beginning of the Dissertation sur la Joconde, contains 11 ll. of text, while there are 16 ll. in the other two printings." (Tchemerzine).
"These Tales are characterized by their cheerful subjects, their playful tone; they do not claim to be realistic, but portray human beings in their foibles, mainly with regard to love. Considered licentious, they were censored and banned from 1675. In fact, they belong to the tradition of "Gallic" poems and stories, with Rabelaisian verve, enriched by borrowings from Italian storytellers: Boccaccio, Machiavelli, Ariosto and Aretinus. They constitute an underestimated part of La Fontaine's creation, but in his time they were one of his greatest successes.
The tradition of the humorous tale, which developed in France in the 15th century, undergoes both an evolution and a kind of apogee with this work by La Fontaine. The use of a worldly tone tinged with gallantry means that the gaillardise is very present, but nuanced in form, and brevity is handled with deftness, for an audience used to the brilliance of salon conversation, and therefore a lover of brief forms. This genre will hardly see other productions of the same level in the following periods. (A. Vi.)
Published during the author's lifetime, this is also the first illustrated edition. It contains a frontispiece and 58 mid-page figures engraved in etching by Romain de Hooghe.
Seven years later, La Fontaine, dangerously ill, disowned his Contes and renounced the profits of Ce livre abominable
This edition contains fifty-eight Contes, i.e. all those composed by La Fontaine except for the six he published in the same year in the Ouvrages de prose et de Poésie in collaboration with Maucroix, and the tale Le Quiproquo, which was not published until after his death.
The witty illustration by Romain de Hooghe, one of the artist's masterpieces, is the only one contemporary with the text; Otto Benesh calls it 'one of the greatest illustrations of all times'.
The Contes are the sum total of Jean de La Fontaine's licentious work, and by order of the king, the police had the collection suppressed.
At the time when the Fermiers généraux edition of 1762 had just appeared, G. de Bure, in his Instructive Bibliography, devoted more than two pages to the description of the 1685 edition, the most beautiful and most sought-after, in relation to the figures by Romain de Hooghe with which it is decorated... and of which, in spite of the new edition illustrated by Eisen, it must nevertheless be admitted that most of the curious seek it out, and still make much of it.
Copy of the first edition.
In this first edition, the engravings are of remarkable beauty.
One of the very few copies preserved in its elegant antique morocco binding by Derome le Jeune.
We have to go back to June 20th 1984 to find a beautiful copy on the public market. The Dennery copy, bound in contemporary red morocco, framed with a straight roulette on the boards, was sold for € 45,000 33 years ago (Ader-Picard-Tajan, 20/06/84), a considerable price at that time.
Unique copy of "Édouard Rahir" as described under n° 1430 of his famous sale of 20 May 1937: "Very fine copy with the figures of the first edition, covered with a nice binding by Derome; it presents the following particularities: 1° in place of the figure of the Villager who seeks his calf, was printed that of The Mandrake, later covered by the engraving of the tale in the first edition; 2° at the head of the following tale, the Ring of Hans Carvel, was wrongly printed the figure of the tale of the Villager, but this oversight has not been repaired. From the library of Lord Gosford.
Rahir owned two exceptional copies of this collective first edition of the Contes de La Fontaine. One described under n° 814 of his sale catalogue came from the libraries of the Marquis de Ganay and Messrs Bocher. Sold for 5,300 FF in 1935, it was resold for 450,000 FF (68,500 €) in May 2000, 16 years ago. The second one, the one presented here, the most valuable, was sold for 6 000 FF on 20 May 1937 (n° 1430).
A magnificent large-margined copy (height: 158 mm) from the Hildebrand libraries with calligraphic bookplate; Lord Gosford (ex-libris); Édouard Rahir (ex-libris, n° 1430); F.M. Abdy (ex-libris).

158 x 98 mm.
" (A. Vi.)
Bocher. Vendu 5 300 FF en 1935, il fut revendu 450 000 FF (68 500 €) en mai 2000, il y a 16 ans. Le second, celui présenté ici, le plus précieux, fut vendu 6 000 F le 20 mai 1937 (n° 1430).
Magnifique exemplaire à grandes marges (hauteur : 158 mm) provenant des bibliothèques Hildebrand avec ex-libris calligraphié ; Lord Gosford (ex-libris) ; Édouard Rahir (ex‑libris, n° 1430) ; F.M. Abdy (ex-libris).
