News from the Philippines, mainly from Mindanao and Jolo Islands, an exceedingly rare imprint. 1639. Madrid. Catalina del Barrio. In folio (300 mm x 200 mm). [6]. Unbound. Very good, a clean and fresh example, with minor insignificant toning. First edition. The wealth of information included in this short tract, although brief, is remarkable, with news mainly on the Mindanao and Jolo islands, their inhabitants (making mention of the privateering activities held by the Jolo islands natives), defences, nature and distances to other islands, an Embassy from Corralat (a present was brought, considered to be small and denied) and another from Cachil Monacay and belligerent actions taken against the region. It certainly constitutes one of the earliest available sources of information on the region. Exceedingly rare, not a single copy sold at auction (according to AE); according to CCPBE (Catálogo colectivo del patrimonio bibliográfico Español) there is no copy in Spain and according to Tavera -one of the foremost bibliographers on the Philippines- only a copy in the British Library could be found. Provenance: offered in 1922 by Maggs, lot 220. Tavera, 691.
