About This Item

Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1969. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo. [10], ix-xii, [2], 1-213, [3] pp. Bound in blue cloth with black lettering on the spine. Price of $8.00 on the front jacket flap. Foreword by Willard Van Orman Quine. Slater 572. Lewis, one of the most important philosophers of the twentieth-century, made major contributions in numerous branches of the subject. In this book, Lewis explicates a general theory of convention based on ideas from game-theory and considers the ramifications of this theory in connection with issues in the philosophy of language, including a particularly interesting account of the notion of analyticity invoking the notion of possible worlds (humorously commented upon by Quine in his foreword). An attractive copy of Lewis' first book, exceedingly difficult to find as such. A Near Fine book with offsetting to the front endpaper extending a bit onto the front pastedown in a Near fine dust jacket with a bit of minor wear to the bottom of the spine panel (with a small archival tape repair to the reverse).
