It became an association for those who attended from 1858 to 2003, when it closed due to falling numbers as graduates were more interested in supporting the needs of their individual institutes. But during it's lifetime it helped to move the university from a purely examining board to a place where teaching and research took place. It also played a major role in supported women's education. Foreword by Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. .
