Boston: Isaiah Thomas & Co, 1789. Hardcover. Good + overall. Early American juvenile Latin phrase book, with phrases from Corderius, a Latin teacher whose work was the standard text for over 300 years. Text in two columns, Latin at the left and English at the right, with phrases, from "What are you doing?" through to "I wish you a good night". Based on the work of Corderius, the Latinized form of name used by Mathurin Cordier (1479 - 1574), a Swiss theologian and teacher of John Calvin, whose Latin colloquies were memorized by thousands of students down the centuries. Signed on verso of rear end paper with previous owner's name, "James B. Armstrong's Book, November 19, 1798". 12mo, 170pp. Full brown contemporary calf, rubbed at hinges, short split along spine, but binding still tight. Internally, the front free end papers torn away, a few early pages with damp stains at margins, not affecting text. OCLC: 5579223.
