About This Item

London : Anne Seile, 1669 A very good copy of the 5th edition 'enlarged and corrected by the Author'. In contemporary full calf binding (which has been rebacked retaining the original spine) and with the decorative title and 4 maps. The binding is in very good clean condition. The front board has the initials FT impressed on the leather and the corners have been rebuilt. The spine has a red title label, and there is some fraying at the top edge. The back board has rebuilt corners and there is some scuffing to the leather surface. Internally there are no pastedown endpapers. At the front, there is the bookplate of William Constable FRS and FAS. Constable was a noted collector and naturalist. Contents: Imprimatur; engraved title; rubricated letterpress title; to the Reader 7pp; To my brother 1p; introduction pp 1-24 with table of climates at p 20; title to First Book 1669'; map of Europe; text pp 27-272; title to Second Book 1668; text pp 1-226; title Third Book 1668; map of Asia; text 1-227; note on errata 228; table 229-230; title Fourth Book Part I Africa 1668; map; text 1-77; title Fourth Book Part II America 1668; map; text 83-154; title Appendix 1669 - including 'Terra Australis'; text 157-162; finis; blank; table 9pp; computation of coins 1p; alphabetical table 25pp; finis. Overall the contents are in very good condition with degrees of toning to the paper and the odd small spot or mark. The verso the imprimatur has old ink scribbles and some old repair; the engraved title has been relaid and has some loss to the corners; there is the occasional paper flaw or small edge tear to the top margin (circa 4); and in the First Book p 185/6 has lost the top corner with loss of the page number, but not text and the bottom corner of p233 without loss of text. The maps are very clean. The maps of Europe and Africa have old reinforcement to the side edge below the attachment and the map of Asia has some old small bottom edge repairs. There is a mispagination in the Fourth Book - 62-55-68-69 - but the text is continuous. Please enquire if you would like to see further images.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
