Top page edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Rebacked with original backstrip laid over. Slight wear to ends of spine and corners of boards. Scattered light foxing. Complete with 12 colour plates. Gift inscription from the Earl of Gainsborough to leading blank: 'To Vera Whitaker from Gainsborough, in remembrance of my last visit to her home at Rainworth during her girlhood days. May 1908'. Vera Whitaker was the daughter of naturalist Joseph Whitaker and resided at Rainworth Lodge in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire. In 1908 she married Harold Bowden, chairman of the Raleigh Bicycle Company.
