privately published, Foxton, Cambridgeshire, 1973. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good Condition. Signed by Author. The author is an ex-schoolmaster who retired seven years ago after serving thirty-seven years on the staff of the Central School - later the Boys' Grammar School - at Cambridge, and has been busier in retirement than he ever was at 'work'. Since 1946 he has lived in Foxton, the location of the cottage whose history is the subject of this book. 'Cottage on the Green', out-of-print for several years, has been re-issued in response to a demand which could not have been anticipated when the original limited edition came out, for then the Common Stream', of which it is the progenitor, had not been written. The twelve-year process of unearthing and sifting material for this book, in which the history of one small house is traced in detail over a period of nearly five hundred years, resulted in a mass of information which the author moulded into the story of a village, typical of thousands, yet perhaps unique in the amount of documentation available and even more so in the manner of its presentation. He did not set out to write a best-seller, merely to pursue an interest which fascinated him. It is now realised that a great many people share this urge to explore the past as it concerns the 'common people' such as most of us are; though few can expect to savour the excitement of an archaeological 'dig' in their own living-room, as he did. The story told here can hardly fail to interest anyone who lives in an old house; and the many who have no hope' or desire of living in a Tudor cottage will not find it dull if they care about people, for the author's main concern is with the people who have lived in the cottage - all seventeen generations of them. Loosely inserted is a newspaper cutting with a picture of the house & the authors obituary. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 92 pages.
