About This Item
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1896. First. hardcover. very good(-). [10], 213, [2 ads] pages. 8vo, original green cloth, pictorially stamped in gilt. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1896. First edition, second printing (1896 on copyright page and 1897 on title page). Paper is somewhat brittle and the upper corners of the first 11 leaves are broken off and repaired with archival tape; front paper hinge glued; re-enforced in gutter on rear of title page. Despite faults this is a better than average copy of a classic title with the gilt stamping on the cover still bright but sunned along spine. A very good(-) copy.

Presentation copy, signed by the author: "To Helena Gilden With affectionate Christmas wishes from Sarah O. Jewett, 1896" on the flyleaf. A beautiful and sensitively written book about Maine and its people.

Reviews
On Jan 30 2014, a reader said:
This was a life-changing read. It is as if it were written specifically for me. The journey was the most uplifting, intriguing, heartwarming, satisfying experience for an avid reader such as myself. The writer is a superb narrator with descriptions beyond compare and character-building skills such as I have never witnessed. Am now reading other authors with similar writing style, (Ruth Moore) as well as others by Jewett. Carol Sullivan
