This is an engaging first-hand narrative of Woodthorpe's journey to the Shan States and on the tribes inhabiting the vast regions of the Far East, accompanied by a large fold-out colour map showing a railway yet under construction, from Mandalay to Kun Lon. Among subjects discussed include: navigatibility of Salwin (Salween) and its tributaries such as Ben Chaung (Nam Pang); the lake dwellings of the Inthas; wildfowl-shooting at Fort Stedman; construction of the railway from Mandalay to the Kun Lon ferry on the Salwin; construction of the cart-road to Taunggyi; cultivation and trade in the Shan States of Keng Hung and Keng Cheng; the relations of the trans-Salwin Shan States to the kingdom of Burma; Burmese oppression; Chinese method of execution, monasteries and populous villages of Keng Tung; old settlement of Shan Chinese (Shan Talok); scattered tribe of Muhso; religious superstitions; and epidemics of fever, small-pox and influenza among the inhabitants of the Shan States in the low lying valleys. .
