About This Item

First edition. Printed for J Milliken: And sold by R Faulder, Bookseller, London. Carlisle. 1786. 8vo. xxiv, (1), 383pp. Contemporary tree calf, gilt rules and leather label to spine. Corners bumped and joints cracked, but firm. Title excised to upper margin, no loss of text. 17pp subscriber list including J Priestley, Wm Cullen and William Paley, with unnumbered page of subscribers not present in all copies. Toned throughout, with some spotting. Small ink stain to edges. Signature to title page. Barely legible note dated 1832, with the name Matthias Ferguson … "come Holy Spirit" loosely inserted: Ferguson marked neatly with pencil in subscribers list.

Miln's reconciliation of recent geological discoveries and scripture: the chapter "To build an Ark" carefully evaluates the practicalities. Paley's own work was published 8 years later.
