Lau predicted the end of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic in China and Hong Kong in March 2003 based entirely on a statistical analysis of the empirical data on newly confirmed cases within specific areas. Here, he and fellow economist Xiong apply the same approach to COVID-19 in specific areas such as Wuhan, Hubai, and Mainland China. In the middle of February 2020, they predicted that the COVID-19 epidemic would be over by the end of March 2020 on the entire Mainland outside of Hubei Province and on the entire mainland, including Hubei and Wuhan, by the end of March.
