Covici-Friede: NY, 1936. 9 x 6, red cloth, 411 pp. This extremely rare and controversial study is well-known and still debated since its 1936 publication. This volume has been kept wrapped in a removable non-sticking clear plastic sheet resulting in a fine cover. The spine's gold highlighted title, author, and publisher (Civici-Fried) is in near fine condition with some gilt wear-down in the title only. The text appears to have been read, and there are two pencil "dots" on the bottoms of pages 286 & 287. Nevertheless, for a book nearly 90 years old (like I feel most days) the text is in fine condition with some minimal range yellowing. The very top edge of the book cover shows some mild shelf wear. For a collector, however, this volume will be a welcome addition to a Lindbergh era library, a psychiatry history section, or a "crimes of the century" shelf.

KIRKUS' July 1936 review (abridged by Kirkus)

A psychiatric study of the Lindbergh case. The beginning is the story of the crime and the reasons why the author drew a picture of a criminal that corresponded amazingly well with Hauptmann. His analysis was based on all types of things -- the notes, the ladder, the symbol with which the notes were signed. He tells of his work with the state -- the capture of Hauptmann -- an almost verbatim report of the trial. Reilly, Wilentz, Governor Hoffman and right up to date with the Parkers. Should appeal to readers of detective fiction -- and followers of the case.

ABOUT Dr. Shoenfeld (his 1971 NYT obituary)(abridged)

Dr. Dudley D. Shoenfeld, a former chief psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital, died there today. He was 78 years old and lived at 320 Central Park West.

Dr. Shoenfeld was often a consultant to the Police Department in criminal matters. His description of the characteristics of the writer of the ransom dates in the 1932 kidnapping of the infant Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. aided in their search that led to the arrest of Bruno Richard Hauptmann, a Bronx carpenter. He was subsequently convicted and executed for the murder of the child.

While at Mount Sinai he established what was said to be the first mental health clinic in the city.

Dr. Shoenfeld was the author of "The Crime and the Criminal," a psychiatric study of the Lindbergh case published in 1936.
