First US edition, likely second printing, decorative hardcover, circa 1887/88. Identification of first editions is complicated and is partially addressed below. Overall condition is good. Boards show moderate patina, wear especially to edges and corners. Prior owner's stamp on front blank, moderate foxing to title page and last few pages of ads, occasional smudge, no tears or folds. Hinges and gutters starting but should hold with proper handling. Paginates: blanks, 384, 24, blanks plus 12 unpaginated plates. All edges gilt. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Popular British author with this title being one of his better known works. An example of early science fiction with a flying submarine. More Notes: True 1st ed. are 1887 by Blackie & Son, London with 1887 date on title page. Most US 1st edition books in this series had a date on the title page but is not the case with this title. Dark green leatherette cover with gilt Modern Library logo on front, gilt titling on spine. Approximately 4 1/4 by 6 1/2 inches. Endpapers with illustrations by Horace Brodzky (from 1919-1925). The first interior page has overall age tanning. The endpapers have some crackling and closed tears (two areas in front, one are in rear). There appears to be a very light pencil marking on the front endpage. The interior is clean with no handwriting or markings and no tears. The cover has wear along the sides of the spine and the corners.

Octavo (8 7/8 by 5 7/8 inches) Washington DC: Republican Congressional Committee, 1880. First Edition. 24 page stapled booklet, with lyrics to more than 40 songs, and music to at least 14 of them; salmon/peach colored wrappers, with title, and black and white woodcut campaign portraits of both candidates, centered on front cover, with a floral and geometric border; back cover shows "The Electoral Vote for 1880" for each of the 38 States at that time; very good condition.

Among the songs are: "Garfield and Arthur, the People's choice," "Garfield Yankee Doodle," "Hurrah for General Garfield," "My country, tis of thee," "Our Boatman," "Star-spangled Banner," "The Conspirators' Song, or The Ex- Confederate's Boast," and "Victory is Sure."

12 mo. (7 3/8 by 5 inches) New York: Excelsior Publishing House, 1888. Original hardcover, 111 pages, 16 pages of publishers' advertisements, illustrated with many black and white drawings taken from photographs, demonstrating various boxing positions. Very good condition, quarter cloth binding, with title on spine; decorative paper over boards.

After a short biography of the author, some of the many other subjects covered are: "Breakfast Diet," "Dumb-Bell Exercise," "Ducking," and "The Marquis of Queensberry Rules," to name a few.

1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Hardcover leather book in overall good condition for its age. Binding is cracked, but still tight and solid. Some markings inside front cover. Information page is torn. Pages are foxed and some staining. Cover edges are bumped. 5" x 8 1/4". 365 pages plus table in rear.

Octavo (8 3/4 X 5 3/4 inches) Philadelphia: Printed For Gratuitous Distribution, 1863. Original First Edition. 16 page sewn paper pamphlet in wrappers, minor discoloration to edges of covers, old $2 price, and old library call numbers written in pencil on top of front cover, old 15 cent price, and calculation figures not related to text written in pencil on back cover, contents clean and unaffected.

In this pamphlet, Judge Leavitt states his reasons (based on historical fact and the Constitution) for his ruling that denied a writ of habeas corpus for the defendant C. L. Vallandigham; leader of the "Peace Democrats," and Supreme Commander of the "Sons of Liberty."

The accused was charged with "mischievous disloyalty" in his opinions and statements; and subsequently arrested at the orders of General Burnside. Lincoln became involved when, in May of 1863, he wrote to Stanton stating that suspension of habeas corpus, as Stanton wanted, would not be necessary in this case.
