The book has been rebound with new leather spine and new leather corners while maintaining the original marbled boards. The interior of the book is clean and tight. The title page has been laminated to retain its integrety. 412-page history of Topeka by the first treasurer, first postmaster and first banker of Topeka. In a pocket at the back of the book are bound clippings on additional events in the history of Topeka. One clipping relates Zebulon Pike's first excursion into what is now Kansas in July 1806. Another clipping relates Cyrus K. Holliday's arrival in 1854 to begin to build up the town and bring the railroad to the area - The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. Did Bush emigrate to Wisconsin, using this book? In 1864, an Edwin C. New York: Harper & Row, 1979. Signed on the title page by James Welch. First edition / First printing. Blue cloth spine, blue paper-covered boards. Very fine in a dust jacket with minor wear, else fine. The jacket is much more attractive than usual for this book. The scarcest of Welch's novels, especially in nice condition.

First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Good condition: original red cloth binding, showing mild age toning, title on front cover, floral patterned end papers.

Many photos of early Los Angeles fire stations, with horse drawn equipment.

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.

Not to be confused with the more common 12 page issue with the cover title Omaha to California. General promotion for the UPRR in 1868, the line apparently having reached Denver and Laramie. Emphasizes the efficiency of the company and the booming prospects for the Nebraska land its lines traverse.
