About This Item

New York: Scribner & Welford. 1889. Hardcover. Second edition, abridged (first was London, 1886, two volumes). Octavo, dark blue boards gilt, brown endpapers. pp (2), (xx), 455 + 13 colour maps (5 folding) + 28 b&w plates; 111 illustrations and one map in text. Preface to Second Edition - "In the present Edition the reduction to one volume has necessitated the omission of the Appendices, together with the Chapter on the History of Kamschatka. The two hand-coloured plates of birds have also been omitted, but with these exceptions both the text and woodcuts remain the same as in the First Edition." Book just a little leaned; spine has nicks, very small chip, and rubbing at ends, as well as some light damp spotting; cracked front inner hinge neatly reparied; some foxing early and late; yellowing to page edges; else a VG clean, tight and unworn copy, no owner names. Account of a British natural history expedition aboard the Marchesa, chiefly focusing on birds, January 1882 - April 1884. Note: 1.5 kg parcel, extra shipping will be required. .
