Description:
1877 Japanese Woodblock Samurai History Nihon Gaishi Tokugawa Shogunate 22v RAREAn interesting Edo woodblock-print of 'Nihon Gaishi,' a 19th-century book on the history of Japan by Rai San'yo, a confucianist philosopher, historian, and poet of the Edo era. This edition was edited by Jiro Yorimata, the original author's second son The whole work of 'Nihon Gaishi' was the first comprehensive study of samurai history, covering Japanese history, from the emergence of the Minamoto clan and the Genpei War, through to the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu in the Edo era. His history was later banned in several provinces because it encouraged strengthening the authority of the emperor and was a major influence on the Sonnō jōi movement, a movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate during the Bakumatsu period. It became part of the private studies of Chinese people in meiji Japan and in their curricula became one of the most read history books from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji era. (Mehl)

"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."Scars and bruises may fade, but we must remember what caused them. The purpose of《Wounds of Hong Kong》is to record police brutality. All 24 interviewees have sacrificed in their own ways during the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades.
