UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued,1st edn.VG++.Owner's (girl) name to name- panel,another different boy's Christian name to front pastedown,but not price-clipped (shows two prices - 7/6 + 37.1/2p, for change over to decimalisation.) Bright, crisp,clean, glossy laminated,wrap-around colour pictorial artwork by Alfred BESTALL,illustrated boards; with some negligible shelf-wear to edges,but all the corners and both head+foot of spine/backstrip inevitably but minimally bumped.Head of spine/backstrip has 2 tiny,tiny closed splits,but without any loss.Upper board has some scoring indents, rear board similar but much less affected.Top+ fore-edges slightly aged/toned - as usual/normal; contents bright, tight and clean - no nicks/tears,foxing/spotting - though there are no intentional dog-ear reading creases to pages' top corners,but there is faint and minimal top corner creasing due to the board's bumped corners leaving light impressions.UK,slim Qrto HB, no dw/dj - as issued,1st edn,4-115pp [paginated] includes 4 colour strip stories,a 3pp and a 2pp origami instructions/illustrations pages to make a lighthouse and mystery bird respectively; plus [unpaginated] contents list/table reverse of front free endpaper, and colour illustrated title page.Cover: Rupert climbing snow- covered rocky slope in front of a pine tree and waving to reader, with Bill behind him leaning on same tree's trunk.First story: Rupert and the Outlaws (1959) - plus 3 others,Rupert and the Blunderbuss (1958),Rupert and the Paper-Fall (1960-1],and Rupert and the Sky-Boat (1960).
Described hard but fairly and honestly.
Alfred Edmeade Bestall (1892-1986),born Mandalay,Burma,the son of a Methodist minister.Studies art on a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts,and afterwards at the Central School of Arts and Crafts,London.After serving in Flanders during WW1 (1915-19),he worked in Fleet Street, contributing humorous illustrations to 'Punch', 'The Tatler',
'The Bystander', 'Passing Show' and various lesser magazines.
In 1936 he took over the Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November,1920.) from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures.He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973.
