Bright,crisp,clean, glossy laminated colour pictorial illustrated card boards and colour illustrated endpapers by Alfred Bestall; with negligible shelf-wear and bumping to edges and corners. Minimal,gentle bumping to head+foot of spine/backstrip with very miniscule splits with reciprocal rubbing to all corners of both the top+bottom of the spine/backstrip edges,book has a slight lean to the right.Corners minimally bumped,some indent impressions to upper board,even less to rear board.Possible(?) baby's upper+ lower teeth-mark bite centrally,to boards lower edges.Top+fore- edges lightly aged/toned - as usual/normal - contents particularly bright,tight,clean,solid and sound with no foxing/spotting nor nicks or tears - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread,apart from my own collation.UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued,1st edn,4-115pp [paginated] includes 4 colour illustrated stories,a Country Walk puzzle,a counter+dice board 'Birds-to-Nest' game,2 sets of Origami instructions/illustrations to make an Imp's Lanntern and a Cave-Hopper respectively,and a publisher's colour illustrated advert for Rupert daily newspaper strip story and puzzle's solution as last page; plus [unpaginated] colour pictorial contents list/table to reverse of front free endpaper and colour llustrated title page.Cover: Rupert and some of his friends having a picnic,with a stork,clutching an addressed envelope for Rupert,flying above them.First story: Rupert's Deep Sea Adventure (1955),and 3 others - Rupert and the Learner (1962), Rupert and the Rugger Match (1961),Rupert and Gwyneth (1960).
Alfred Edmeades Bestall (1892-1986),born Mandalay,Burma,the son of a Methodist minister.Studied art on a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts, and afterwards at the Central School of Arts and Crafts,London.After serving in Flanders during WW1 (1915-19),he worked in Fleet Street, contributing humorous illustrations to 'Punch', 'The Tatler', 'The Bystander','Passing Show' and various lesser magazines.
In 1936 he took over the Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November,1920.) from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures.He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973.
