UK,slim Qrto HB,no dw/dj - as issued,1st edn.NFINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip (53p).Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated,wrap-around colour pictorial illustrated card boards,by Alfred Bestall; with negligible shelf-wear and bumping to edges and corners.Corners inevitably but minimally bumped,some virtually imperceptible laminate wrinkles,indents to upper board.Top+fore-edges lightly aged/toned - much less than usual/normal - contents though are particularly bright, tight and clean - with no foxing/spotting,nicks or tears.UK,slim Qrto HB, no dw/dj,as issued,1st edn,4-115pp [paginated] includes colour strip stories,2pp origami instructions to make Rupert's salad plate,a flower puzzle page,and solutions to puzzles page.Cover: Rupert sat on a branch in a pine tree,with various other friends/ characters.Rupert has a white face,hands and boots.[The last cover design by BESTALL.]. First story Rupert and the Bouncers (1961-2) plus 3 others - Rupert and the Housemouse (1961),Rupert and the Waterfall (1962),and Rupert and the Flying Boat (1961).An exceptional copy. Alfred Edmeades Bestall (1892-1986),born Mandalay,Burma,the son of a Methodist minister.Studies art on a scholarship at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts,and afterwards at the Central School of Arts and Crafts,London.After serving in Flanders during WW1 (1915-19),he worked in Fleet Street, contributing humorous illustrations to 'Punch', 'The Tatler', 'The Bystander', 'Passing Show' and various lesser magazines.In 1936 he took over the Daily Express series of Rupert Bear strips (created by Mary Tourtel and first appeared in the paper on 8th November, 1920.) from her and by the time he retired from morning paper work in 1965,he had produced over 270 Rupert adventures.He continued to draw for the 'Rupert' annuals until 1973.
