'This work is intended by the Publishers to supply a long felt want in our antiquarian literature, and at the same time to provide in convenient form a souvenir of the Cathedral Churches of England and Wales. Since the great period of restoration under Sir. G. G. Scott, no finely produced series of pictures of these churches has been placed upon the market though a wonderful number of guide books have greatly increased the public appreciation of their beauties. Messrs. Dennis have aimed at giving a complete pictorial survey, and have spared no expense to make it in every way worthy of such a splendid subject. Eight pictures of each cathedral have been carefully selected and reproduced by a new carbon process, short descriptive letterpress facing each print. A general introduction to the history and architecture of each cathedral is also given. Mr. Fairbairns has personally visited every cathedral, and has aimed all through at a critical, though sympathetic, interpretation of their beauties. The notes are free from all technicalities, which so often tend to annoy the general reader. 'Condition: In original paper wraps. Externally, smart but with some edgewear and occasional chipping. With some marks to boards, in particular to front of volume nine. Lifting to top layer of paper to front board volume three and rear board of volume nine.
