Boston & New York: Lee and Shepard & Charles T. Dillingham, 1884. 32 pages; a biography of Daniel O'Connell [the 'Liberator'] (1775-1847) Irish nationalist leader, "...While in popular esteem O'Connell is the quintessential Irish national champion, his international significance is underestimated. He was a key figure in the emergence of European democracy and no Irish person before or since has commanded so much attention on the continent as he did in his lifetime. Similarly forgotten to a large extent is his role as an advocate of the rights of those civilly disadvantaged such as Jews, black slaves, and Australian Aborigines. Universalist and nationalist, champion of the weak and truculent bully, man of principle and shameless opportunist, O'Connell remains, like Napoleon or Gladstone, one of those figures with whom historians will never even imagine that they have finished." (R. V. Comerford in the DNB); previous owner name of W.M. Nesbit on cover and title page, noting attendance at Columbia College; some wear and darkening, closed edge-tear to front cover; lacks back wrap cover; in good condition; the author, Wendell Phillips, (1811-1884) American orator, abolitionist, and women's rights and labor advocate, Harvard graduate, manager of the affairs of the executive committee of the American Anti-Slavery Society and a leading member of Boston's Vigilance Committee and "...Although historians' estimates of abolitionism vary widely, Wendell Phillips has usually been regarded as one of the movement's most challenging and instructive actors and a commanding presence in the history of the nation's struggles to overcome racial and economic injustice." (James Brewer Stewart in the ANB) - perhaps in O'Connell's turbulent life, Phillips had found a kindred spirit and inspiration. . First Edition. Soft Cover. Good.
