This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards. There is some bumping and severe fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, but the pages are clear of any markings.

"Halfway down the ugly cobbled street, he paused to look back. The hackney still waited at the door of his inn, grotesque as an overgrown pumpkin in the fog. Below, where the pavement slanted to the water's edge, the river was drowned in that same gray cotton wool. He walked slowly downhill, welcoming the cold sting in his lungs. This afternoon the weather had slicked the cobbles from brown to greasy black; the dampness highlighted the flanks of the gray horses and spangled the whiskers of the porters sweating at warehouse doors. The quays themselves were blurred ghosts of commerce; but the loadings went on regardless, despite the weather. They would continue until the last ship had cleared. Too many others were waiting in the murk down-river, eager to nose in for their share. It was the autumn of 1862, and Glasgow bustled with the freight of Mars from Clydebank to the firth.
