An apparent first edition - preface is dated 1850 and the author talks of having just finished the novel, and there is no information or dates as to other printings. Half-leather hardback with ridge-backed spine. Dark green leather and cloth, which is rubbed and scuffed to corner and spine edges. A few small marks to cloth. Foot of spine is rubbed and worn; minor wear to ridges of spine; top 8mm of spine is torn from front and rear boards. Binding firm and intact. All page edges are gilt (small red paint-like stain to leading edge). Highly decorative endpapers are unmarked. Name in light pencil to first unprinted page.
