London: Thames and Hudson,, 1977. First edition, second impression (a year after the first), inscribed on the title page by the artist in alternating pink and green letters, "For Victor Ross. David Hockney", and with his printed name struck through. Victor Ross (1919-2021) was a senior executive at Reader's Digest and head of the firm's European division. He established the "Thank-You Britain" fund in 1964, which sought to express gratitude to Britain for its acceptance of Jewish refugees from Central Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. Helping to raise over £90,000 for the British Academy, Ross's efforts were considered by the Association of Jewish Refugees to be "a major highlight of our community's assimilation into British life" (Briggs, p. 22). Quarto. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt dolphin centrepiece to front cover. With dust jacket. Illustrations throughout, many in colour. Small mark to foot of rear cover, slight bump to lower tips and edges, affecting jacket, inner hinges split, contents clean.
