Laurence was a Russian-born journalist (his birthplace is now in Lithuania), who had emigrated to the USA in 1905 and started his journalistic career in 1926. He specialised in writing on scientific subjects, and was the official historian of the Manhattan Project, being present at many of the key events in the story which he retells here. With many photographic illustrations Condition notes: Spine faded, some wear/bumping to boards, internally clean, bright and unmarked.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1946. 273 pages + plates and index in very good condition. Previous owner's stamps on the ffep and on some of the interior pages. Black and white plates at the back of the book. Some corners are torn and creased. Page edges are lightly darkened. Head edges are dyed with faded black publisher's stain. Bound in light brown cloth with dark red titles. Boards are lightly scuffed and stained. Lightly darkened and worn around the edges. Corners lightly bumped. 1ST EDITION. SCARCE. VG/- -. 1st Edition.
