In original green cloth binding with blind-stamped rules and decoration on cover with gilt otter devouring a salmon, mermaid on back cover, and gilt lettering and eagle on spine. 13 color lithographs and 9 B&W vignettes, all accounted for in this copy. RARE original cloth binding of the first printing of this desirable book. A custom clamshell case has been made for it c. 1920, in dark green linen with the title in gilt lettering on spine, with 1843 date, a very nice case is very good condition, lined in matching green paper. Illustrations by L. Haghe, T. Landseer and S. Williams from paintings by Sir David Wilkie, Edwin Landseer, Charles Landseer, William Simson, and Edward Cook. Condition of the book is VERY GOOD ; corners are bumped as are ends of spine. Very little edge wear, covers very clean with a few slightly paler areas to front. Spine is slightly faded, with 1" tear to upper rear of spine. Front hinge is slightly weak, with fine crack inside, ditto rear hinge, though it is much firmer. Mild foxing to endpapers and some pgs, also to the borders of the illustrations, though the illustrations themselves are very clean and good. Text overall very clean and fresh, and binding very solid with no loose pgs. In brown ink at top of title pg is the name Augustus Frederick Thistelhwayte, Dec 14th, 1880. A lovely copy in rare original binding, and carefully stored for nearly a century in a fine clamshell case.
