London: William Heinemann, 1927. Schmidt, Harold Von. Octavo. Second English edition and first illustrated edition. Illustrated with full-page chapter headings, head- and tailpieces from drawings by Harold von Schmidt. This is the first illustrated edition of Cather's most significant novel. Rebound in half burgundy morocco, with red cloth over boards, five raised bands, and gilt ornamentation to spine and rules to covers. Fine. T.e.g. Together with a copy of the later printing by Knopf in 1940. This bound in full green cloth over boards with paper labels to upper cover and spine. Generally present sunning, else very good in a very good dust wrapper, which is measurably toned, cosmetically chipped, and bears a minor dampstain to the top right corner of the upper panel.
Synopsis
Death Comes for the Archbishop is a 1927 novel by Willa Cather. It concerns the attempts of a Catholic bishop and a priest to establish a diocese in New Mexico Territory. The novel was included on Time Magazine's 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005 as well as the Modern Library's list of the 100 Best Novels.
