About This Item

Firenze: Il Magheri, 1827. Marbled boards/Leather Spines. Very Good. 1827-8. 5 volumes in 3 books. Leather spines with pressed gilt titles, marbleized paper-backed boards. Text in Italian. Wear to corners, rubbing to cover edges and spine ends and edges, remarkably clean text with only very occasional scattered foxing. Some light chipping to spine of Vol. I-II (first book), which has a bookplate at front pastedown. Original pink place-keeping ribbons present. The Decameron is a collection of medieval allegorical short stories written in the mid-14th century and is considered central to the Western canon, influencing writers ranging from Geoffrey Chaucer to George Eliot.

Synopsis

In the summer of 1348, as the Black Death ravages their city, ten young Florentines take refuge in the countryside. They amuse themselves by each telling a story a day for the ten days they are destined to remain there - a hundred stories of love, adventure and surprising twists of fate. Less preoccupied with abstract concepts of morality or religion than earthly values, the tales range from the bawdy Peronella hiding her lover in a tub to Ser Cepperallo, who, despite his unholy effrontery, becomes a Saint. The result is a towering monument of European literature and a masterpiece of imaginative narrative.
