THE DECISIVE MOMENT

by Cartier-Bresson, Henri

  • Used
  • Hardcover
New York: Simon & Schuster in Collaboration with Éditions Verve, 1952. Small folio. Decorated boards after a design by Matisse. Illustrated with 126 photographs (some double spread). An unusually nice copy, near fine, in slightly tanned dust jacket (replicating Matisse's design) with a few smudges at the extreme lower edges, a short closed tear at the top edge of the front panels, and a few short tears and a small creased snag at the edges of the rear panel. First edition, US issue, printed in France. Accompanied by the separate [12]pp. quarto leaflet printing the captions to the photographs in English. The design was undertaken by Teriade, with the collaboration of Marguerite Lang, and the photographs engraved and printed in heliogravure by Draeger Frères. This state of the dust jacket prints comments on the rear inner flap by Monroe Wheeler, Philippe Halsman, Jacob Deschin, et al. In his important introduction to this collection, one of the defining books in the field of photography from the immediate post WWII years, Cartier- Bresson sums up the principles that would inspire the work of countless photographers for the next half-century or more: "There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment ... To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression." The initial edition consisted of approximately 3000 French language copies and 7000 English language copies, and like any number of significant books, received highly positive reviews but sold only a slow trickle of copies. Because of the nature of the binding and dust jacket, copies in agreeable condition, as here, are few and far between. The first faithful reprint was finally published in late 2014.

[New York: The Intimate Gallery], 17 April 1927.. [4]pp. Folded leaflet, 28 x 21.7cm. Fine. First edition. An important document in the history of The Intimate Gallery and John Marin's career, being Stieglitz's own sortie into the fray of opinion surrounding the sale of a group of Marin's paintings to Duncan Phillips in December of 1926. In brief, Stieglitz told several intimates that Phillips had paid $6,000 for Marin's BACK OF BEAR MOUNTAIN. Word leaked out to the public, Phillips claimed that the figure was inaccurate, and he and Stieglitz exchanged assertions and denials. The entire episode is summarized on pp.282-3 of Lowe's STIEGLITZ A MEMOIR / BIOGRAPHY.

Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
