London: Thomas Hurst, 1840. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Book condition is Good+; bound in full cloth with embossed decorations and gilt titles on spine, gilt vignette on front panel. Edgewear to boards including bumps and chips. Stains and scuffing to boards. Stains along inside of front and back covers. Staining to rear end papers has bonded rear end page and rear pastedown. Light staining to page ends. No markings to text. Illustrated throughout with diagrams, plates, and one fold out plate relating to defense against "brute force," taking another as prisoner, the art of falling down, etc. A thorough overview of defense with a multitude of swords, rifles, and other instruments of combat, includes humorous notes on matters such "tilting at a water butt." ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall.
