Description:
In the "Just Plain Weird" category, consider the man who from about 1925 on baffled the medical and scientific community with his ability to GROW. That's right, this famed sideshow performer appeared to grow inches taller on stage -- hence his nickname, "The Man Who Grows Before Your Eyes." Through the 1950s, Willard continued to amaze and confound, appearing on shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" (6 April 1958). What he signs here is as off-the-wall as what he did: a folded-down promotional broadside, single sheet (printed recto and verso), 27" X 18¼" (folds down to 9" X 6 3/4"), Grand Rapids, MI, n.y. [ca. 1934 or earlier]. Near fine. The front panel, which reads "The / Complete / Refrigerator / LEONARD / a name with more than a half / century of / REFRIGERATION BACKGROUND" in bold orange and black, bears his handsome large inscription in a blank area: "Clarence E. Willard / 'The Man Who Grows' / 1934."…

New York: McDowell, Obolensky, 1959. First edition. Octavo. Original cloth and dust jacket (not price-clipped). Minor scuffing to dust jacket, and faint toning to front free endpaper, one-inch bookshop sticker to rear paste-down endpaper, else fine in fine dust jacket.. A fine copy of the third book published by William F. Buckley Jr. (1925-2008). Up From Liberalism was published in 1959 following the publication of Buckley's controversial and influential God and Man at Yale: The Superstitions of "Academic Freedom" (1951), which he wrote at twenty-five as a trenchant critique of Yale University's collectivist and secularist curriculum, and McCarthy and His Enemies: The Record and its Meaning (1954), co-authored with his brother-in-law, L. Brent Bozell, in defense of Senator McCarthy's public crusade against Communism. After publishing his first two works, Buckley founded National Review in 1955, serving as editor-in-chief until 1990 and establishing the magazine as a leading source for American…

Philadelphia: Lippincott's Press, 1873. Hardcover. Near Fine -. 31, [1] p.; 18 cm. Red cloth with gilt-stamped cover title: Bonds in the Bank. Gilt-stamped decoration on front board and mirror blind-stamped decoration on back board. Boards have bevelled edges. All page edges gilt. Dark brown endpapers. Pages [3]-31 are printed on recto only. This booklet was probably given to the guests at the celebration of the 10th wedding anniversary of Mary Harris and Wistar Morris. The 10th anniversary is traditionally the tin anniversary, which would be observed by a present of a tin bank containing railroad, government, or other bonds. Instead, in this case, it contained the poem written, presumably by Wistar Morris, to celebrate their anniversary, as well as a shorter poem he had written 10 years earlier to welcome her to Green Hill Farm. Mary Harris Morris (1836-1924) was on the board of managers of the Orphan's Asylum of Philadelphia and the Howard Home for women discharged from prison; she also opened a…

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire…

The hard cover has seen a good amount of wear. The lettering on the cover is worn. The previous owner's name is written on the first page. The pages are tanning. With 766 pages of text, this biography quickly proves comprehensive, scholarly and extremely detailed. The breadth of the author's knowledge of Cleveland and his era is breathtaking and I can hardly imagine a more thorough or thoughtful review of this former president.Published twenty-four years after Cleveland's death, this biography benefits from a chronological proximity to its subject but lacks the perspective which can only be derived from the passage of time. Some bias in favor of Cleveland is clear and in the end Nevins overestimates the durability of Cleveland's legacy and lasting impression.
